Call me crazy, but even though we live in South Florida, to me, Labor Day signals the end of summer and the start of the upcoming holiday (Thanksgiving, Chanukah, Christmas) season countdown. It’s also means it won’t be long before the invites to attend some of the biggest and best nonprofit fundraising galas are sent out.
The way I see it, our weather may stay warm, but our minds are leaving the ‘lazy days of summer’ behind. With Labor Day behind us, most South Floridians know the fall season doesn’t just signal warm days and cooler nights, there is also a mental shift that starts to happen within us. For some this is the beginning of moving toward celebration planning. For me, it signals a reminder to review those New Year’s resolutions I made to myself and reconnect, renew and recommit to them before the year is over. Particularly those resolutions that reconnect me with my exercise routine, renew my promise to eat healthy and recommit my support to the charities that share my world view.
Moving from Ordinary to Extraordinary
As human beings we have a great capacity to forgive, to be generous and to care for others. Yet when it comes to ourselves, one area we tend to neglect and negate is our bodies. We prioritize meeting deadlines, making time for our friends and family, and even are willing to put in overtime to further our career goals. But when it comes to taking care of ourselves, we put ‘us’ on the back-burner. I am as guilty of this as the next person, which is why this year I want to challenge myself and you to do something different – prioritize YOU!
Our bodies are marvelous, awe inspiring designs. We sometimes forget how extraordinarily fine-tuned this machine of ours is, how it gives us the capacity to feel joy, to experience love and to open our hearts to kindness. Instead, we tend to focus on our imperfections, the numbers on the scale, the lines on our face or some other limitation. We misplace our attention, our time and our awareness on the superficial.
When we nourish our mind, body and soul, we not only do something good for ourselves, we feel good too.
Recommit. Reconnect. Renew.
When Thanksgiving comes to mind, most think about the food. This year, feed your body and spirit first and your belly later. Focus on doing something good for yourself and something good for others. To paraphrase Jim Rohn, let’s make a vow to take care of your body, and treat it like it is the only place we will ever have to live.
Do Good, To Feel Good.
