Kelly Alvarez Vitale is the President and Founder of Strategic Philanthropy, Inc., and Co-Chair of this year’s Turkey Trot and Paddle. We interviewed Kelly to find out her favorite ways to say thanks
Favorite > Thanksgiving Tradition:
Answer: Watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade
Favorite > Way to Mange/Real-In My Holiday Expectations:
Answer: I learned a long time ago at family functions that everyone has their own unique personality and that they aren’t going to change. So instead of getting angry, I accept them for who they are. Accepting them for who they are was very freeing. I also realized that we don’t have everyone forever, so enjoy the time that you do have with them.
Favorite > Part of Spending Time with Family & Friends:
Answer: Continuing to sit at the kids table, with my husband, and my younger cousins who are 20 years younger than me.
Favorite > Thanksgiving Guilty Pleasure:
Answer: My mom’s beyond cheesy squash casserole. She only makes it once a year.
Favorite > Way of Giving Back to My Community:
Answer: Working in philanthropy, people always think philanthropy is about writing a big check. It’s not. It simply means love of humanity. Another great way to give back is with your time. Last August, I signed up to be a United Way Reading Pal and challenged myself to go and read to a 1st grader for 25 weeks. I saw a little boy grow up on a weekly basis and improve his reading skills. Even during the most challenging weeks, I knew I was making a difference.
Favorite > Childhood Thanksgiving Memory:
Answer: I had the opportunity to be a part of the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade my senior year of high school. My entire family traveled up with me to spend Thanksgiving together. On parade day, it was freezing and raining and my parents and sister stayed outside in the cold to watch me pass by (my 15 seconds of fame!). As Floridians, we had never experienced so much cold! We then had a big Thanksgiving dinner at a really nice NYC restaurant and laughed about the experience of the day.
Favorite > Part of Thanksgiving:
Answer: I have really enjoyed waking up the last 3 years to run the Turkey Trot & Paddle. The day is always beautiful, we see so many of our friends supporting the community and it really starts the day on the right foot.
